Digital Roots conducted a youth lead video project in southern Costa Rica in March/April, 2007 working in four rural communities. The project had several goals. First, to provide rural Costa Rica youth with the opportunity to learn about and use digital video cameras and editing software. Second, to encourage youth to think about the pat, present and future of their community and their roll in realizing tier vision for the future. Third, the videos will be used by Digital Roots and Casa de la Juventud, a youth lead Costa Rican NGO, to solicit donations and community development project. The forth and final goal of the project was to conduction research in conjunction with the London School of Economics to investigate the social psychological effect of traditional (negative) questions on participation and community development projects. As an organization, Digital Roots believes that positive questions focusing on the resources and past success of communities is more effective than traditional development strategies.
Youth from each of the four communities were divided into three groups an each given a digital video camera an asked to produce a video answering the following questions:
1. Record a video showing your community’s resources, your vision for the future of your community and how you can use what you have to achive your vision. (positive)
2. Record a video showing your community, your vision for the future and how you plan to achieve your vision. (neutral)
3. Record a video showing what your community lacks, your vision for the future and what you will need to achieve your vision. (negative)
